Mullewa's Local History

Mullewa is a small town located in the Mid West region of Western Australia. The town was first settled in the late 1800s and has a rich history that has played an important role in the development of the region.

Indigenous History

The Indigenous Yamatji people originally inhabited the land where Mullewa now stands. Known as the Martu, they were hunter-gatherers who moved across vast distances to source food and water. Their connection to the land is still felt in modern-day Mullewa and the town's surrounding areas.

European Settlement

In 1867, a party of explorers led by George Grey passed through the area and noted its potential for agriculture. Soon after, the land was opened up for grazing, attracting European settlers. The Mullewa townsite was gazetted in 1894, and the town began to grow rapidly.

Mullewa's Boom Years

The early 1900s saw rapid development in Mullewa. Agriculture became the town's main industry, with wheat and sheep farming being the primary sources of income. The opening of the Mullewa to Geraldton railway in 1894 was a significant event in the town's history, and it allowed farmers to transport their produce to market more efficiently.
